Q: I try to do yoga whenever but as I have so many things to deal with at the same time I find it difficult to concentrate. Therefore, when I am practising yoga, I find that I cannot really unwind as much as some of my friends seem to. What should I do? N. Simpson – Derby
A: It’s completely normal to find it challenging to unwind and concentrate during yoga practice, especially when you have a lot on your mind. Here are some tips to help you find more focus and relaxation during your yoga sessions:
- Set an Intention: Start your practice by setting an intention for your session. This could be anything from finding peace and relaxation to improving flexibility or releasing tension. Having a clear intention can help you stay focused throughout your practice.
- Focus on the Breath: Pay close attention to your breath as you move through each pose. Deep, mindful breathing can help calm the mind and bring you into the present moment. Try to synchronise your breath with your movements to create a sense of flow and ease.
- Practice Mindfulness: Practise mindfulness by bringing your attention to the sensations in your body as you move through each pose. Notice how each movement feels and try to stay fully present in the moment, letting go of any distractions or worries.
- Use Props: Don’t hesitate to use props like blocks, straps, or bolsters to support your practice and make poses more accessible. Using props can help you feel more comfortable and relaxed, allowing you to sink deeper into each pose without straining.
- Take Breaks: If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or distracted during your practice, don’t be afraid to take breaks as needed. You can pause in a resting pose like Child’s Pose or Corpse Pose to regroup and refocus before continuing with your practice.
- Find a Quiet Space: Choose a quiet, peaceful space for your yoga practice where you can minimise distractions and fully immerse yourself in the experience. If possible, dim the lights, play soothing music, or light candles to create a claming atmosphere.
- Practice Gratitude: Take a moment at the beginning or end of your practice to express gratitude for yourself and your body. Acknowledge the effort you’re putting into your practice and the benefits it brings to your overall well-being.
Remember that yoga is a practice, and it’s okay if your mind wanders or if you find it difficult to unwind at times. Be patient with yourself and keep coming back to your mat with an open mind and heart. Over time, you’ll find that your ability to concentrate and relax during yoga improves.
