LOCAL YOGA TEACHERS STRETCH FOR SYRIA
London Team raise money for Syrian Refugee Crisis, Sponsored by Yoga Alliance (USA)
Everyone knows the benefits of yoga in conditioning the body and helping practitioners find inner harmony, but two London Yoga instructors are looking to turn their passion into pounds as they seek to raise money for the Syrian Refugee Crisis early this summer.
On June 25th 2016, trained yoga instructors Sophia Al-irimi (www.asana-yoga.com) and Maysa Marques (Maysa Yoga) will launch #stretch4syria Yoga Vegan Picnic- an afternoon of meditation and yoga for both experienced fans of the discipline as well as complete beginners. Taking place at The Bandstand, Queen’s Park, North West London, would-be participants are asked to donate a minimum of £20 in order to attend the 2 hour workshop designed for ‘all levels’ and stay for a delicious vegan picnic.
Maysa Marques says: “As the number of refugees increases, so does the basic human needs of food, water, clothes and shelter. Sophia and I wanted to turn our passion for yoga into something that could raise as much money as possible to help others as well as do themselves some good. ”
Sophia Al-irimi added: “We welcome anyone who is interested in stretching for the cause to sign up and join us at what promises to be a fun event. At £20, you will enjoy meditation, yoga, and Yoga Nidra, a form of relaxation, which is beneficial for mind and body. At the same time you get to support a great cause and help the refugee crises.”
#Stretch4Syria is part of Hero Yoga, a collaborative started by Al-irimi and Marques, dedicated to the coordination and production of yoga events, which raise money for established charities and organisations supporting refugee crises, mental health care and homelessness.
The pair hosted Stretch4Syria Yogathon earlier this year, a 6-hour yogathon, which was a massive success, raising close to £3000 for the cause. The picnic will be a more intimate affair, with a guidance on the benefits of meditation and yoga, an hour of hatha yoga and some relaxation exercises, followed by wholesome vegan food. The pair have managed to get sponsorship for the event: Vita Coco will quench our thirst with chilled coconut water, Ombar will be supplying yogis with chocolate treats, Coconut Collaborative will be giving out vegan coconut yoghurt, and Aduna will be donating their super-fruit supplements to our goody bags along with Skin and Tonic a British all natural skin care brand, popular with Yogis, who will be popping something lovely in the goody bag too. Yoga mats will be on loan from Lululemon Athletica.
Members of the public interested in taking part should register and book their space by logging on to the Hero Yoga website www.hero-yoga.com. They can also follow the event on Twitter and Instagram using the handle #stretch4syria.
Yoga come rain or shine! It is the ‘Great British Summer’! So in the event of rain, the bandstand is the ideal location for yoga and a picnic. If the sun is shining, we will move onto the grass!
All proceeds raised from the event will be donated to charities dedicated to providing food and clothing for Syrian Refugees. To see more about the charities: https://hero-yoga.com/charities/
The yoga and meditation workshop has been designed for all levels of ability, so all are welcome.
Joining hero Yoga in running the workshop are Katie Ray (https://theyogamethod.co.uk/class/) and Beth Win (www.urbanyogamonkey.com). Catering is by the lovely vegan cook Rosie!
