In the heart of Manchester’s hip Northern Quarter, Yoga Manchester has made its city centre home at Studio 25. Primarily a contemporary dance studio – and a very stylish one at that – Studio 25 hosts Street Dance, Zumba, Hip Hop, Jazz and many more styles, alongside Yoga Manchester’s ‘Yoga Express’ classes.
Matt Ryan and his team at Yoga Manchester began Yoga Express as a way to bring compact morning, lunchtime and evening classes to city centre residents and workers. The sequence is an abridged version of the Ashtanga primary series, which develops strength and flexibility in equal measure. Matt’s team deliver classes that offer accessibility to new practitioners, and challenge and depth for more experienced yogis.
Matt is passionate about sharing his wealth of experience. He was taught and authorised to teach by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and for the past 15 years has run yoga classes throughout the south Manchester suburbs. He says, “we want to bring our distinctive style and enthusiasm for Ashtanga to busy people in the city centre, and show them they can fit an energising, strength building class into their schedule.”
Matt’s youth was spent as a DJ at the world-famous Haçienda club, which makes his yoga business’s growth towards the city centre something of a return to his urban roots. Matt’s connections with world-leading yoga practitioners has also meant that he has been able to offer a unique variety of workshops and talks to the Manchester yoga community.
In August 2013, Yoga Manchester brought Ashtanga guru and vlogger Kino Macgregor to Studio 25 for two workshops, which attracted practitioners from all over the UK. In May 2014 David Swenson returns to Studio 25 for his 40 hour Yoga Immersion programme.
Yoga Express classes run throughout the week; if you’re interesting in trying a class, check out Yoga Manchester’s schedule at yogaexpressmanchester.co.uk
