The Yogi Ashokananda Foundation

Based at the Ashok Tree Ashram in Tiruvannamalai, South India, the Foundation is spearheaded by yoga and meditation master Yogi Ashokananda and a dedicated team of volunteers, friends and students. This sacred area was once the home of the late saint Sri Ramana Maharshi and is a pilgrimage destination.
Keen to give back to his homeland of India, Yogi began the charity in 2005 with The Sita Devi School, a primary school in North India, and moved the premises to the Ashok Tree ashram in the south in 2011. The Sita Devi School sits under the umbrella of the Foundation and at present educates children from 4 to 10 years old. In addition to the curriculum, the school offers yoga and meditation to the children and staff and educates on the benefits of health and hygiene.

The Foundation focuses on the area of Paliapattu where there is a lot of poverty, sub-standard hygiene, poorly educated children and a high suicide rate. The primary goal is to educate on all levels (both academic and lifestyle) which will filter into stronger social development, create prospects for the children and a community, not only just at the ashram, but worldwide among the people who become involved in helping and raising awareness of the charity. Future projects include a special needs centre for adults and children, developing a clinic to treat the sick, an orphanage and an integrated community area for the elderly to live. All the community projects will integrate yoga, meditation, naturopathy and Ayurveda into the framework.

The Yogi Ashokananda Foundation is currently funded by donations and supported by the hiring of the ashram and its yoga facilities to teachers and meditation groups for international programmes. Yogi Ashokananda’s training programmes and yearly retreats also provide a financial and social contribution towards the Foundation. If you are interested in becoming a long or short term volunteer, have equipment or clothing you would like to donate or you would like to offer your support in any way, please get in touch.
