Yoga Place is a hidden gem in East London’s Bethnal Green. Tucked away on a busy, urban street, this calm and friendly haven has been offering yoga practices for 14 years; making it East London’s longest-running studio.
“Yoga Place has soul”, says Sarah Slyne, a Hatha Flow teacher at Yoga Place. “Every time you walk in, you feel at home. It is friendly, unpretentious, and down-to-earth with a huge heart.”
The owner, yoga teacher Lisa White, is quick to say that this is not a “trendy yoga Studio.” Yoga Place offers a space that is all about yoga. This is reflected in the variety of traditional practices available. They range from strong practices such as Dynamic and Asthanga (both counted and Mysore self-practice), to medium intensity Hatha flow, Vinyasa flow, and Yin-Yang; and finally to gentle styles like Yin, Restorative, and Tantra.
It also offers workshops in specialist practices such as Partner yoga, Yoga Nidra and Inversions. It caters for all levels – offering beginners courses, advanced classes, yoga for the over 60s, and ‘Yoga Place Baby’ (pregnancy, mum and baby, postnatal Yoga classes, and workshops in Yoga for Labour, Hypnobirthing and baby massage).
“The beauty of yoga”, says Yolanda Barker, who teaches both dynamic and meditative practices at the studio, ”Is that everyone can reap the benefits. Some people want to de-stress, others want to exercise, some want insight or healing. Each practice and teacher offers one or all of these, and different personality types come to different practices.”
Students consistently comment on the variety of classes, and the atmosphere. “Every teacher has given me a new and different insight; helping me on my learning,” says Juan, who has been practising yoga for 18 months. Regular student Teena says, “I like that you can smell the incense as you come up the stairs, I like the colours, the sense of space. I like that there are no mirrors, and I love the lavender-scented eye pillows.”
Yoga Place also has a therapy room offering treatments that range from the practical to the decadent. Massage, reflexology, acupuncture, metformin-online.com therapy for children, Thai yoga massage, physiotherapy, and psychotherapy are all available.
