Ask Yogi January2026

Q – I want to set meaningful New Year resolutions with my partner without feeling overwhelmed. How can yoga help us create sustainable intentions together?

–S. Smith, London

A: As a yoga teacher, I often remind students that intentions are not rigid goals but gentle guideposts for life’s unfolding path. Instead of approaching resolutions with pressure or perfectionism, treat them as seeds of awareness that you and your partner can nurture together. Begin by sitting side by side in Sukhasana (Easy Pose) or standing tall in Tadasana (Mountain Pose). Close your eyes and take slow, steady breaths until you feel your energies align. Visualise your shared dreams — perhaps creating a small mandala or intention board to symbolise them. Let the process feel creative and playful, not demanding. Draw inspiration from the Niyamas, especially Tapas (discipline) and self- study, to maintain balance between effort and reflection. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to measure ourselves by what we achieve, but yoga teaches that growth happens through presence and compassion. Speak your intentions aloud, practice mindful breathing, and check in weekly. Over time, you’ll discover that true resolutions are not about perfection — they’re about evolving together, breath by breath.
