Ask Yogi January2026

Q – I often feel anxious, overwhelmed, and mentally cluttered after the holidays. Can yoga help calm the mind?

– C. Garcia, Birmingham

A: Anxiety is a universal visitor, especially when the world feels like it’s moving too fast. After the holidays, when routines feel disrupted, it’s natural to crave stillness. Start with grounding poses such as Balasana (Child’s Pose), Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog), and SuptaBaddha Konasana to soothe the nervous system and bring awareness back to the body. Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) helps balance the two hemispheres of the brain and clear mental fog. Sometimes, I recommend drawing a simple mandala or lighting a candle to focus the wandering mind — these rituals can feel meditative in themselves. Remember, peace doesn’t arrive in grand moments; it unfolds through small acts of presence. Even five minutes of mindful breathing each day can shift the entire tone of your mind. Through yoga, we learn that calm isn’t something we find — it’s something we return to.
