Q. I find that with increased exposure to chilly air and allergens, my asthma can worsen. How can Yoga strengthen the lungs and promote easier breathing?
– S. Sherbourne, Warwick
A: Yoga can be highly supportive for respiratory function when practiced mindfully and with regularity. Postures like (Fish Pose), Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), and Ardha Chakrasana (Half Wheel Pose) help open the chest and improve lung expansion. Focus on gentle backbends and avoid overly strenuous exertion. Pranayama practices such as Ujjayi, Anulom Vilom, and Bhramari help regulate breathing patterns and improve respiratory control. For those with chronic conditions, Savasana with guided breath awareness can retrain shallow or panicked breathing into deeper, calmer cycles. You should also aim to start a mindfulness practice as well, to release anxiety and stress on the mind and body. A regular trataka practice either with candle or another prop is excellent for relaxation as well.
