Q – I experience neck and shoulder tension from desk work and holiday stress. How can yoga help me and my partner release this tension?
– N. Ivanov, Brighton
A: If your shoulders have been creeping toward your ears and your jaw feels tight, you’re not alone — this is the posture of modern life. Hours of screen time and seasonal busyness leave the upper body heavy with stored tension. Begin gently with slow Neck Rolls, Eagle Arms (Garudasana arms), or Gomukhasana arms to release the fascia and reawaken circulation. Flow into Cat-Cow movements, letting the spine move like a wave with each breath.
For deeper release, try Supported Fish Pose or a restorative heart opener with a bolster beneath the back — this helps reverse the forward slump of daily posture. Pair the practice with slow, diaphragmatic breathing or Bhramari Pranayama to calm the nervous system. Massage warm sesame or mustard oil into the shoulders afterward to seal in relaxation. When you and your partner practice together, tension begins to melt — not just in the body, but in the emotional space between you. It becomes less about fixing the pain and more about rediscovering softness and connection.
