Ask Yogi January2026

Q – I’m thinking of joining a yoga class but feel overwhelmed by all the information out there. What steps can I take to find a good class, and what should I avoid?

– M. Mondal, Southampton

A: Feeling overwhelmed at the start of a yoga journey is perfectly natural — the world of yoga today is vast, with countless styles, teachers, and trends. Start by reflecting on why you want to practice. Are you seeking stress relief, strength, community, or deeper self-understanding? Your “why” will guide your “where.” Look for a class that emphasises breath awareness, alignment, and mindfulness over intensity or competition. A good teacher will encourage you to listen to your body, not push beyond your limits. Try beginner-friendly or “gentle flow” classes first, and observe how you feel — physically and emotionally — afterward. Studios that feel welcoming, inclusive, and attentive to student needs are usually a good sign.

Be cautious of environments that rush through poses, promote pain as progress, or focus excessively on aesthetics. Yoga is not about performance; it is about connection. Visit a few studios or online sessions, talk to instructors, and trust your intuition. Remember, the right yoga class feels like coming home to yourself — calm, centred, and curious.
