Q – I suffer from seasonal allergies and find it hard to breathe clearly, especially during winter and early spring. Are there yoga practices that can help my lungs?
– F. Robinson, London
A: Allergies can affect breathing, focus, and energy. Poses like Matsyasana (Fish Pose), Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose), and gentle chest-openers expand lung capacity. Pranayama such as Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing) and Ujjayi breathing supports oxygenation and calms the nervous system. Also practice gentle Neti (nasal irrigation) which is known to relieve congestion. Enjoy warming teas with ginger or Tulsi to support the respiratory system. Practice mindful breathing during short breaks at work or home to reduce anxiety and maintain energy. Even 5–10 minutes of morning pranayama can help clear airways and cultivate calm for the day.
