Q – How can pranayama help me make the transition from summer to autumn and at the same time maintain balance in both body and mind? Are there specific breathing techniques for this seasonal change? I am a regular yoga student and practising yoga has improved my health considerably.
C. Brown, Leeds

A – As we move to cooler weather, pranayama can help balance the body’s energy. To calm excess heat from the summer, practice Sitali (cooling breath), which refreshes and soothes the system. For grounding and reducing any vata imbalances, try Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) to promote mental clarity and calm. Ujjayi breath is also beneficial for cultivating focus, steadying the mind and also preparing you for the introspective energy of fall. Regular practice of these techniques will harmonise your energy and strengthen your connection to the changing season
