Q: I broke up with my partner a few month ago but haven’t been able to adjust to life very well. My friend has advised I should try some yoga. I have never done yoga before and was thinking whether to join a class. Can yoga help with feelings of loneliness or disconnection?
H. Takahashi (Tokyo, Japan)
A: Yoga can help make connection through Anahata Chakra (the heart energy centre), which symbolises love and compassion. To feel more connected, practice Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) or Ushtrasana (Camel Pose) to open the heart area physically and energetically. Follow with a meditation on gratitude, where you reflect on three people or experiences that bring joy. Additionally, Kirtan (chanting or singing mantras) can create a communal sense of belonging, even if practiced online or alone.
