Q: Just a quick one Yogi: What is the meaning of dharana and is it same as dhyana. The reason I’m asking is that my teacher says both mean the same thing and, I am telling her that can’t be right. What do you say?
N. Patel – Southampton
A: You are correct; as they are completely distinct concepts and yoga techniques.
DHARANA
This refers to concentration. Techniques associated with dharana are designed to help one master this method of self-development for increasing one’s stamina, managing emotions and boosting confidence.
It is also the prelude to psychic awareness and more refined states of mental activity including dhyana .

DHYANA
This refers to meditative, contemplative, reflective techniques aimed for acquiring a deeper understanding of our existence.
When the mind achieves a correctly concentrated state through dharana, it can reach the state of dhyana. In this state, the mind becomes completely still, allowing one to attain higher spiritual goals.
